Social (Revolution) Networking

Like any teenager, I am "slightly" addicted to social networking. More recently, I have noticed how much I check my Facebook and Twitter, before I even get out of bed in the morning I catch myself up on everything I missed out on while I was sleeping. Just the thought of not having that easy access, is not something I like to entertain.  I read an article on the New York Times website this morning about how the government opened up public access to websites like Facebook and YouTube after THREE years! I can't imagine what my life would be like if it weren't for these websites. Though, you never really think about the power that a website like Facebook can hold until something major happens. Sure every now and then we see a fight between some high school girls that leads to more than just internet word fighting, but you never think about the fact that a huge revolt could occur. It just doesn't really pop up in my mind that all it takes is to make a simple page on Facebook dedicated to an anti-government protest to start a revolution of sorts. Also, the fact that the government can just block off my access makes me curious as to whether or not they can/will look into my actual Facebook page. We never think about the fact that someone somewhere probably can log in and view those things we expect no one to see. Hearing this news just really opened my eyes to how much of a hold the social networking corporations really have on my day to day life.

  1. Dear Christine,

I have written about Facebook many times because I find the addiction to constant news fascinating! I agree that it is a scary thought that someone can view all of the information you post as well as controlling what all you can see. That is a lot of power and can be very helpful/destructive.

The part where you mentioned how easily something as monumental as a revolt can be decided based on one Facebook post was probably my favorite part of this entry- and it happens to be incredibly true as well!

I agree, like I stated earlier how scary it is for someone (like the government) to have control over what we do on Facebook and also what we can see. It is not fair for the government to limit us like that in the least bit.

Thank you for bringing a new light to a “hot topic.” Cannot wait for your next posts!

  2. Dear Christine,

Just like you I am also very addicted to both Facebook and Twitter. I agree with you that these social network cites have a lot of power when it comes to your control. Not only that but also the fact that people can make pages that can cause a uproar at such ease.
One quote that really stood out to me was, "Sure every now and then we see a fight between some high school girls that leads to more than just internet word fighting, but you never think about the fact that a huge revolt could occur." This stood out to me because this is very true. A simple click of a few buttons and blurting of hurtful words could send groups of people into a madness.
Another quote that really stood out was, "Also, the fact that the government can just block off my access makes me curious as to whether or not they can/will look into my actual Facebook page." This is a scary thought to think that the government has so much power over us. Now days nobody has privacy.
I really enjoyed reading your blog. I agree totally with what you had to say about the social networks. I will definitely comeback to read your other blogs.

    Sincerely,
    Hummingbird
